Focus on Eyes - Nov 9th & 10th, 16th, & 23rd
Eyes are the windows to the soul, right? Getting the eyes right in any portrait, regardless of species, is one of the most important things to creating a realistic portrayal. Animal eyes are a fascinating study in diversity. They come in an amazing variety of colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes and tell you a lot about the animal itself. Some look very similar to ours while others look completely alien. While this is not a class in eye anatomy, it is important to know what an animal’s eyes really look like. If you get it wrong, it will be the first thing that draws a viewer’s eye.
In this 4-part workshop we will look at the diversity of animal eyes and learn how to create wet and glossy realistic looking eyes that will bring your artwork to life. Each week we will focus on a different eye type that can be used for a variety of species with similar eye structure. For example, we will learn to draw a horse's eye, which will allow you to also be able to draw the eyes of sheep, goats, deer, antelope, etc. Learning how to create the various eye types will teach you techniques that can be used for all eyes, including human.

This workshop will be similar to the Fur, Feathers, Fins, & Scales. Instead of having a materials list that is the same for everyone the Focus workshops allow you to bring your preferred mediums and materials to work with. I will teach you basic techniques that can be applied to any medium and I will also spend time showing and discussing specific techniques for your medium and/or surface. Don't forget to bring the other essentials such as erasers, brushes (if needed), blending stumps, applicators, tape, drawing board, transfer paper, sharpeners, etc. that apply to your chosen medium(s). If you have a favorite surface you like to work on, or a surface you have wanted to try, please bring that too. I will be providing a few surface options for both dry and wet media too. I will also be providing reference photos and line art for each exercise.
Don't get hung up on colors. The techniques you will learn are about how to create realistic looking eyes. Eyes come in just about every color so we will work with whatever you have.
If you are working in graphite or charcoal pencils I recommend using mostly the B range or soft sticks which are softer and darker which will give you the ability to create a greater value range and more depth. Also, HB and 2H pencils and a Tombow Mono Zero eraser and kneaded eraser for fine details. You may also wish to use powdered graphite or charcoal for the underpainting and a white charcoal pencil if you are working in charcoal.
If you plan on signing up for this workshop, please send me a quick email telling me which medium(s) you are going to use. This will help me make sure I have the right supplies and examples to help you get the most out of your medium(s).
This workshop is for all skill levels.
Cheers! Lara
